The Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds will get a final chance to take a top four Suncorp Super Netball scalp when they face off with ladder-leading Giants Netball at Sydney Olympic Park on Friday 19 May 2017.
Queensland have defeated every side below them on the ladder this year, but have only taken a solitary point from any of the current finals contenders – a round one draw against Sunshine Coast Lightning.
The Giants took back top spot on the ladder last Sunday after snapping Melbourne Vixens’ eight game winning streak with a tough four-point win.
Firebirds captain Gabi Simpson said the side were determined to shock the league’s top ranked side.
“The Giants had an enormous win over the Vixens and I think they’re a bit vulnerable coming off the back of that result and the week before where they just got by Adelaide,” Simpson said.
“We really want to get a win over one of the teams above us – it’s really important to us.
“We take a lot of confidence from our first three quarters against Adelaide last Saturday because we built on our lead every quarter. That’s what you need to do to win the tough games.”
Queensland’s finals hopes rest on notching a big win over the Giants and a Collingwood loss to West Coast Fever on Saturday.
Simpson said the results pattern of the season showed anything was possible.
“The ripper thing about Suncorp Super Netball is that the bottom teams are well and truly capable of taking on the top sides. We’ll be keeping an eye on it, but we need to win first to give us any chance,” she said.
“We had quite a few unforced turnovers against Adelaide, so if we can bring them back and capitalise on the ball we win we’ll do really well against Giants.
“That’s what you have to do against these top teams. If you can hold possession, you’ll be right there with them.”
