Firebirds v Vixens: Round 3 Preview

After disposing of the reigning champions last weekend – it doesn’t get any easier for the Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds in Round 3, taking on last year’s minor premiers the Vixens in Melbourne.

The home side remain undefeated and are currently 3rd on the Suncorp Super Netball ladder, while after last week’s hard-fought win, the Firebirds jumped two places to sit under the Vixens in 4th on eight competition points.

Queensland will be boosted by the return of influential defender Laura Geitz – who’s been cleared to play, after she was sidelined with a minor back injury in last week’s victory over the Sunshine Coast.

“To win without Geitzy who is an experienced player and having her fit and ready to tackle this game on the weekend is just going to add another element of strength to our line-up,” said Firebirds vice-captain Caitlyn Nevins.

Despite the spirited win against Lightning, Nevins knows her side can’t become complacent.

“You have to back it up every single week because the Suncorp Super Netball is so tough and hotly contested and with the new points system with the league it’s closer than ever.

We want to be seen to be fearless, we want to be deadly and have a lot of mongrel out there on court,” Nevins said.

It’s a tough opening month for the Firebirds – playing three of last year’s top-four sides, but Nevins is adamant they’re up to the challenge.

“That’s the cards we’ve been dealt, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Our downfall last year was that it took us too long to really find form, but we’ve got form right from the get-go and we want to continue building that form over the course of the season.

Born and bred in Victoria – Nevins won the 2014 national title with the Vixens, but that’s slowly becoming a distant memory in her 5th season as a Firebird.

“I’m very much a Queenslander, but I do love Melbourne.

I actually went through the Netball Victoria pathway so I know their game-plan quite well, but they know mine as well so it’s a game of cat and mouse.”
